The hotel
A resort inside a nature reserve.
Al Maha opened on 1 March 1999 with thirty suites and seventy Arabian oryx, a species then extinct in the wild. The land around it was protected first, and later became the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, the first national park in the UAE. It now covers about five per cent of Dubai's land.
The herd has since grown past eight hundred. Oryx and gazelles roam the camp freely and come to drink at the suite pools. The resort takes its name from them. Days follow the desert: a wildlife drive at dawn, falconry or a camel trek, then dinner on the dunes.
- Wildlife at the door Arabian oryx and gazelles move freely through the resort. Guided wildlife drives and nature walks go further into the reserve.
- Desert days Horse riding, camel trekking, archery, falconry and sundowners in the dunes, all arranged from the resort.
- Dinner on the dunes A picnic under the stars, or a private chef cooking a barbecue in a spot of your own. Breakfast can float in your pool.
