The hotel
A convent in Surry Hills.
The building went up in 1903 as a school convent and later served as a women's refuge and a hospice, a Gothic front on a back street of Surry Hills. It is heritage-listed. In 2018 the hotelier Paul Fischmann opened it as the Little Albion Guest House, and about three months later Crystalbrook Collection bought it. A modern building beside the convent holds more of the rooms.
The rooms mix Art Deco, Bauhaus and Seventies pieces, with pink terrazzo underfoot. Portraits by Ann Cape line the main stair, among them Kate Leigh and Tilly Divine, figures of the neighbourhood's past. The MICHELIN Guide lists it with one Key, one of ten Key hotels in Sydney. Breakfast is included, the honour bar stays open all night, and a trolley of gins comes round the lounge at five.
- Honour bar Wine, spirits and snacks to help yourself to at any hour, and a trolley of Australian gins in the lounge every evening at five.
- On the roof A garden and deck above the convent, with views over the rooftops of Surry Hills.
- Bring the dog The Urban rooms open onto the street on the ground floor and are the ones kept for guests with pets.
