The hotel
A department store and a picture palace.
Gowings was one of Sydney's best-known department stores, and its building on Market Street opened in 1929, the same year as the State Theatre next door. One is a Palazzo-style block, the other a mix of Gothic, Venetian and Art Deco. Both kept their heritage status when QT Hotels turned them into a single hotel, which opened in September 2012.
Woodhead reworked the two buildings, Nic Graham did the public rooms and Shelley Indyk the bedrooms. Rooms on the theatre side are louder, the Gowings ones plainer, with the store's 1929 timber floors. A barber on site nods to the one Gowings ran for generations, and a digital art wall by Daniel Crooks greets you in the lobby.
- Gowings Bar & Grill A brasserie built around a wood-fired oven and a rotisserie, with a mezzanine for private dinners.
- Gilt Lounge The cocktail bar upstairs, with DJ sessions. The MICHELIN inspectors say it draws as many locals as guests.
- spaQ Six treatment rooms, a hammam-style steam room and ice room, and a traditional barber.
Rooms & suites
A dozen styles, no two alike.
The 200 rooms come in a dozen designs, with dark stone bathrooms, deep baths and showers lit from above. Some minibars hold a martini kit.
- Rooms QT Deluxe King The core room, in the theatre or the Gowings building, each floor dressed differently.
- Suites QT Corner Suite One of 19 suites, with more space and a sitting area on the corner of the building.
