The hotel

The post office on Martin Place.

The Colonial Architect James Barnet designed the General Post Office as an Italian Renaissance palazzo in golden Pyrmont sandstone. Work began in 1866 and went on in stages, and when the clock tower was finished in 1891 it was the tallest civic building in the colony. The carved reliefs of colonial life by Tomaso Sani were so realistic that they caused a public outcry.

The building was refurbished in the 1990s and sold in 2017. The Fullerton Hotel Sydney opened inside it on 18 October 2019, with 416 rooms split between the heritage building and a modern tower. The restaurant looks down into a six-storey glass atrium, a small Australia Post shop still trades on site, and guests can join a free tour of the old post office.

  • Afternoon tea Served daily from noon to 4 pm in The Bar, in the lobby.
