The hotel
The airline's hotel.
A boarding house called Wentworth House stood here from 1855, named after the statesman William Charles Wentworth, and it later grew into the Wentworth Hotel. In the 1950s Qantas Empire Airways bought it to lodge the passengers it flew in, with its own headquarters next door. Then the airline rebuilt it. The new hotel opened on 14 December 1966.
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill drew it with the Sydney firm Laurie & Heath: a curved brick front, then called the largest brick structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Sheraton and Rydges ran it before Sofitel took over in 2004. In 2024 the studio FK finished a $70 million refit, keeping the mirrored 1960s ceiling of the ballroom and bringing in a new set of restaurants. The City of Sydney has listed the building as a heritage item since 2000.
- Wentworth Bar A rooftop terrace bar, opened with the 2024 refit.
- bar tilda Martinis, Australian whiskies and live jazz downstairs.
- The ballroom The Wentworth Ballroom keeps its mirrored ceiling from the 1960s and seats up to 750.
