The city
Layer upon layer of the city.
Rome is read in layers: the Colosseum and the forums, the Pantheon under its ancient dome, the fountains and churches of the Baroque. The old centre is best on foot, from Piazza Navona to the Spanish Steps, with Villa Borghese green above Piazza del Popolo.
Spring and early autumn are the easiest months. From April to September the days run from 18 to 30 °C and rain is light. July and August are the hottest, with afternoons best spent indoors and dinners late on a terrace.
Arriving
Fiumicino for airlines, Ciampino for jets.
Rome has two airports with separate roles. Airlines use Fiumicino on the coast; private aircraft use Ciampino, closer to the city on the south-east side.
