The hotel
Valadier's garden.
Marquis Francesco Lucernari bought the land in 1816 and gave the project to Giuseppe Valadier, the architect of Piazza del Popolo next door. By the 1820s it was a hotel, the Albergo di Russia. Picasso and Jean Cocteau stayed from February to April 1917 while they worked on Parade, the ballet set to Stravinsky's music. Cocteau called the place an earthly paradise.
Count Vaselli closed it after the war, and from the mid-1950s the building housed RAI, the national broadcaster. Rocco Forte took it over in 1999 and reopened it as a hotel in 2000, with interiors by Tommaso Ziffer and Olga Polizzi. The garden behind has since been restored to Valadier's plan, terraces climbing towards the Pincio, with parrots in the trees.
- The Secret Garden About 0.7 acre of terraces below the Pincio. Le Jardin moves outside here in the warm months.
- Stravinskij Bar Named after a past guest, the bar spreads into the piazzetta Valadier in summer for aperitivo.
- De Russie Spa A salt water hydropool, sauna, Turkish bath, six treatment rooms, a hair salon and a gym.
