The hotel
From a Piarist college to a hotel.
The palazzo was built in the sixteenth century as the home of Angelo Maria Colocci, a humanist and secretary to Pope Leo X. In the seventeenth century Cardinal Michelangelo Tonti gave it to San Giuseppe Calasanzio, founder of the Piarists, who opened the Collegio Nazareno inside. Popes and nobles visited the school, which survived both the Napoleonic and the Nazi occupations and closed only in the 1990s.
The Federici family began the restoration in 2021 with Rome's heritage office, and asked Luca Guadagnino, director of Call Me by Your Name, to design it. His studio kept the grotesque ceilings and the frescoed Aula Magna by Gaspare Serenari, and added custom furniture and modern art. Marianna Lubrano Lavadera of Mia Home Design Gallery worked on the bedrooms. The name comes from Thalia, the muse of comedy.
- The spa Underground, modelled on a Roman bath, with a pool under a dome of green majolica, a Turkish bath and a sauna.
- Bar della Musa A small cocktail bar under original grotesque frescoes on the ceiling.
- The Aula Magna The great hall of the old college, on the second floor, painted with eighteenth-century frescoes.
