The hotel
César Ritz's first Roman hotel.
The Grand Hotel opened in January 1894. César Ritz planned it, and on the first night Auguste Escoffier cooked sixteen courses for a hundred guests. The hotel calls its Ritz Ballroom the first public ballroom in Rome. The building became The St. Regis Rome in 2000, the first St. Regis in Europe, and celebrated its 130th year in 2024. It stands on Via Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, a few steps from Piazza della Repubblica.
Pierre-Yves Rochon redesigned the rooms in 2018 in a classic style, and the ballroom was restored over six months. Royal families and state delegations have long stayed here: one wing has its own lift and can be closed off from the rest of the hotel. In the hall, contemporary works from Galleria Continua hang under the old ceilings, and the Lumen bar fills up most evenings.
- The evening sabrage Every day at 7 pm a bottle of champagne is opened with a sabre, to piano music. A harpist plays at breakfast on some mornings.
- Lumen The all-day restaurant and cocktail bar, with Italian cooking and an outdoor space. Its garden opens from May to September for private receptions.
- Spa by Sisley Paris Treatment rooms and a sauna, with a Technogym gym open around the clock to guests.
