The hotel

Oscar de la Renta's villas by the sea.

In 1969 Frank Rainieri and the New York lawyer Theodore Kheel bought a long, empty piece of coast on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic. It had no roads. They built a hotel, then an airport, and the Puntacana Resort & Club grew to some 15,000 acres. The designer Oscar de la Renta joined the project in 1997 and co-owned Tortuga Bay with Rainieri and Julio Iglesias.

He designed the thirteen villas himself: yellow walls outside, white rooms within, canopy beds in wicker and coral stone in the bathrooms. His boutique still stands among them. Markham Roberts later led a renovation, and the Dominican designer Jorge Brown Cott has carried the work on since. The villas face either the sea or the golf courses, and Tortuga Bay holds one MICHELIN Key.

  • Two courses La Cana, 27 holes by P.B. Dye, and Corales by Tom Fazio, with holes running along the Caribbean.
  • A private reserve The Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve covers some 1,500 acres of forest and freshwater lagoons next door, free for guests.
  • Your own manager Each villa has a manager on a mobile phone from 8 am to 11 pm, and a golf cart for getting around the resort.
