The hotel
Marriott's first resort in China.
Marriott announced the Sanya resort as the first it would run in China, on Yalong Bay, the long crescent of sand east of the city where many of the island's big beach hotels now stand. The Smallwood studio planned the building as eight storeys across 26.7 acres of beachfront, so that rooms look over gardens, the hills behind or the bay.
The whole hotel was renovated in 2020. Since then the Kids Club was redone in July 2023, and Man Ho, the Chinese restaurant, in June 2024. Between the building and the sand lie lagoon pools, a lap pool and tennis courts, and the Yalong Bay golf course is close by. Eleven meeting rooms, 1,250 square metres in all, take conferences.
