The hotel
Pool villas around a lagoon.
Banyan Tree opened here in the spring of 2008, on Luhuitou Bay at the southern tip of Hainan. The MICHELIN Guide calls it China's first resort made up entirely of pool villas. Architrave, the group's own design studio, drew the villas with red clay tiles on the roofs and black slate on the walls, and set them among palms, lawns and lotus ponds.
Each villa has a courtyard, a pool and an outdoor shower, a plan the guide describes as part southern Chinese, part Balinese. The estate covers thirteen hectares around a lagoon, and the villas come in four kinds, from one-bedroom pool villas to two-bedroom villas for families. Two presidential compounds were built alongside, each with a pool of more than 300 square metres and quarters for an entourage.
- A pool for every villa All 49 villas have their own pool and garden, and the larger spa villas add a jet pool.
- Banyan Tree Spa The brand's first hydrothermal complex in Asia, beside a spa set close to the sea.
- Luhuitou on foot The Luhuitou headland park is about a kilometre away, and the city centre about ten minutes by car.
