The hotel
Mandarin Oriental's first resort in China.
Mandarin Oriental opened its Sanya resort in February 2009, the group's first hotel in mainland China and, unusually for a brand known for city hotels, a low-rise beach resort. It stands on about thirty acres between the hills and a private beach of 1.2 kilometres, with protected coral reefs offshore. The MICHELIN inspectors describe interiors a little more rustic than the group's usual style, but sleek.
Rooms and suites sit in low buildings with balconies. The villas and pavilions are built in stone, either on the sand or up the hillside, and the Ocean Front pavilions come with a plunge pool and their own way down to the beach. The Spa Village is a separate compound of wooden pavilions and pools, with eighteen treatment rooms and a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine.
