The hotel
Schrager's private ocean.
The Sanya EDITION opened in December 2016, the first hotel in China from Ian Schrager and Marriott. The Singapore firm SCDA designed a horseshoe of rooms on a little over fifty acres of Haitang Bay, with interiors by Schrager's own team and CAP Atelier of Hong Kong, and gardens by Madison Cox of New York. Separate pavilions hold the reception, the lobby lounge, a shop and the spa.
In the middle lies the private ocean: about five acres of seawater pumped in from the South China Sea, tiled in glass mosaic, with boats, kayaks and paddleboards. At the entrance, a pond of water lilies is set in black granite, and the reception desk is a stack of oiled African tea wood logs. The hotel now has 501 rooms, all looking towards the water.
- The private ocean Calm seawater for swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding, with cabanas floating on it and dinner platforms over the water.
- Sky Bar A rooftop bar with an infinity pool and a bar counter of elm 42 feet long.
- The spa Two floors by the sea, with twelve treatment rooms, hydrotherapy, a sauna, a steam room and a tea bar.
