The hotel
Plain outside, loud within.
W Hotels chose Osaka over Tokyo for its first hotel in Japan, and opened it on 16 March 2021. Nikken Sekkei designed the building with Tadao Ando in charge of the exterior: a black monolith on Midosuji with a white W. The idea comes from Osaka's Edo-period merchants, who dressed plainly in the street under rules against showing wealth and kept their luxury for home.
Inside, the Amsterdam studio concrete went the other way. The way in is a lit tunnel of more than three thousand angled plates, folded like origami and kirigami, whose colours change with the seasons. Floors alternate between cherry-blossom pink and sea blue, and each room hides a pixel-art panorama of Osaka by eBoy. On the 27th floor, the Extreme WOW Penthouse has a DJ booth built in, the first in a Japanese hotel room, according to the hotel.
- WET A twenty-metre indoor pool under an LED ceiling on the fourth floor, with an open-air deck beyond and a bar beside it in season.
- LIVING ROOM The bar on the third floor runs from afternoon tea into the night, with a resident DJ at weekends.
- Sushi Ukiyo An omakase counter behind a hidden door at the end of a curtained zigzag corridor, hung with Nishijin textiles from Kyoto.
