The hotel
A grand hotel since 1811.
The Fonseca family, from Portugal, built the palazzo in 1620 on the square behind the Pantheon. It became one of Rome's grand hotels in 1811, and the register filled with writers: Stendhal, Herman Melville and George Sand all stayed. A marble Minerva, carved by Rinaldo Rinaldi in 1854, still stands under the glass roof of the old courtyard, a few steps from the Pantheon.
Orient Express, the Accor brand that began with the train in 1883, chose the building for its first hotel. The owners, Arsenale Group, asked the French Mexican architect Hugo Toro to restore it. He kept the columns, statues and Murano chandeliers and added Art Deco lines in a raw, matt finish. The hotel reopened on 8 April 2025 with 93 rooms in fourteen categories, 36 of them suites.
