The hotel
Donizetti's house.
The palazzo on Via delle Muratte, the lane that runs from the Trevi Fountain towards Via del Corso, was once the home of the composer Gaetano Donizetti. The restaurant takes its name from his comic opera Don Pasquale. The hotel is one of four that the Shedir Collection runs in Rome, and its thirty rooms and suites spread over four floors above the street.
Inside, the style is eclectic and loosely Art Deco. A hall under a glass dome links the rooms to the public spaces, a portrait of Marilyn in eighteenth-century dress hangs in the lounge, and paintings of hats appear in every room. The Argentine artist Stanley Gonczanski painted the faux classical murals in the restaurant, which sits in a winter garden hidden from the street.
- Don Pasquale The restaurant and bar under a glass roof in the winter garden, cooking updated regional Italian dishes all day.
- The bar A mirrored wall of bottles, a long list of rums and candles from sundown, popular with Romans as well as guests.
- Trevi on foot The fountain is at one end of the street and Via del Corso at the other.
