The hotel

Guest house of the Torlonia.

The building began as lodgings for the guests of the Torlonia family, whose palazzo stood nearby, and the hotel dates the house to the sixteenth century. In 1837 the Duke of Bracciano, a Torlonia, bought it; the architect Antonio Sarti rebuilt it, and by 1845 it was taking paying travellers. Henry James and Mark Twain stayed, as did Oscar Wilde, Hemingway and Ezra Pound, then Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

Starhotels runs it in its Collezione group. Work began in 2023 on the façade and the upper floors and went on through the public rooms, and the hotel reopened on 27 September 2024. Rubelli fabrics and William Morris papers went up on the walls, and the black-and-white floor on the ground level stayed.
