The hotel
Built in concrete, a floor a week.
Dorchester House stood on this stretch of Park Lane from the eighteenth century and took its name from the Earl of Dorchester in 1792. It came down in 1929. Owen Williams drew a hotel in reinforced concrete, William Curtis Green finished the design, and Sir Robert McAlpine built it in about eighteen months. It opened in April 1931, and its builders called it bomb-proof.
In the war that reputation filled it with ministers, and in 1942 Dwight D. Eisenhower took a suite on the first floor. The stage designer Oliver Messel decorated the top floors in the early 1950s; Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton spent their honeymoon in his suite in 1964. The Sultan of Brunei has owned the hotel since 1985, and in 2023 Pierre-Yves Rochon reworked its rooms.
- The Promenade The hotel's central lounge, redesigned by Pierre-Yves Rochon, for afternoon tea and lighter meals all day.
- The Grill Relaunched in 2025 under executive chef Martyn Nail, with beef Wellington and steak tartare finished at the table from trolleys.
- The Dorchester Spa Nine treatment rooms, a steam room and a gym, with Valmont, ishga and Carol Joy London products.
