The hotel
A Paris hotel on Piccadilly.
César Ritz opened the hotel on 24 May 1906. The architects Charles Mewès and Arthur Davis gave it a French face and Louis XVI rooms, but the engineer Sven Bylander hid a steel frame inside, one of the first of its size in London. The cream Palm Court has served tea at the Ritz ever since.
The Barclay brothers bought the hotel in 1995 and sold it in March 2020. Along the way it added William Kent House next door, restored for private events, with suites of its own, and a Royal Warrant for banqueting. In 2022 work began on 53 more rooms on Arlington Street and a spa below ground, planned to finish around 2028.
- Tea at the Ritz Afternoon tea in the Palm Court, the hotel's most famous room. Jacket and tie for gentlemen.
- The Rivoli Bar An Art Deco bar designed by Tessa Kennedy in 2001 to recall the Orient Express.
- The Secret Garden An outdoor garden bar, with the Cigar Shop close by.
