The hotel
Victorian bones, Art Deco polish.
A hotel has stood here since 1812, when Mivart's took a terraced house on Brook Street. William and Marianne Claridge bought it in 1854, and in 1860 Queen Victoria came to call on Empress Eugénie of France. Richard D'Oyly Carte of the Savoy bought the hotel in 1893 and rebuilt it: the seven storeys designed by C.W. Stephens opened in 1898.
By 1929 Oswald Milne had remade the entrance and lobby in Art Deco and added a wing of eighty rooms and the Ballroom. On 17 July 1945 Winston Churchill declared Suite 212 Yugoslav territory for a day, so that Crown Prince Alexander could be born on Yugoslav soil. Thierry Despont restored the house for its centenary in 1998. Between 2016 and 2021 the hotel dug a five-level basement beneath the 1920s wing and added rooms in a new roof extension.
- The Foyer and Reading Room Afternoon tea under the Art Deco ceiling, the room the MICHELIN Guide singles out for it.
- The Fumoir A small bar in burgundy and gold, open since 1929.
- Claridge's Spa An indoor pool with private cabanas, below the hotel.
