The hotel
From hospital to Hyde Park Corner hotel.
St George's Hospital moved into Lanesborough House, the town house of the Viscounts Lanesborough, in 1733. In 1827 the old house came down and William Wilkins began a new hospital on the site, the building that stands today, listed at Grade II*. The hospital moved out to Tooting in the 1970s, and by 1980 the building stood empty. Under a clause in the original sale, the Duke of Westminster bought it back for its nineteenth-century price of £6,000.
Rosewood opened it as a hotel in 1991. It closed at the end of 2013 for a refurbishment of at least £60 million under Oetker, which now runs it for the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and reopened on 15 July 2015 with interiors by Alberto Pinto. Every room and suite has a butler on call day and night, and the hotel has a resident cat, Lilibet, a Siberian named for the late Queen.
- A butler for every room Round-the-clock butler service in all 93 rooms and suites, called with one touch of a button.
- The Garden Room A cigar lounge with cognacs going back to the 1770s.
- The Lanesborough Club & Spa A private members' club and spa below the hotel, open to hotel guests, with its own restaurant.
