The hotel

At the forest edge of Zermatt.

The Matthiol stands at the southern end of Zermatt, in Winkelmatten, where the village gives way to forest. Outside it is stone and weathered wood on a hillside under the Matterhorn; inside, exposed beams meet a cleaner, modern finish. The name comes from the matthiola, a rare purple mountain flower. Dennis and Mareike Szelkowski have been the hosts since July 2022.

The hotel is the centre of Maisons Matthiol, a small group that also lets private apartments in the village and runs Stafelalp, a restaurant at 2,200 metres below the north face of the Matterhorn. The MICHELIN inspectors picture a house of hikers, bikers and skiers, and the hotel restaurant, Filet et Fils, cooks hearty food for them over an open fire.

  • Igloo fondue In winter, Filet et Fils serves fondue in private igloos that seat four.
  • Spa rooms The largest rooms come with their own sauna, hammam and freestanding bath.
  • The spa route A steam grotto, saunas and infrared chairs lead to an outdoor jacuzzi, with a Rasul mud room to book separately.
