The hotel
Built by the village, for the village.
In 1876 the parish priest, Josef Ruden, persuaded the burghers of Zermatt to build one large hotel for the whole community. They gave their labour without pay, so the village would carry no debt, and kept the right to run it for good. It opened in 1879 with ninety-four rooms and 150 beds, then the largest hotel at the foot of the Matterhorn.
Descendants of those families still run the Zermatterhof. The building is Belle Époque with touches of Swiss chalet, and most rooms have balconies. Service follows the old grand-hotel manner. Audrey Hepburn stayed here, and Walt Disney spent several summers and shot a film in Zermatt; the Matterhorn Bobsleds opened at Disneyland in June 1959. In 2021 the Sonntagszeitung named it Swiss Hotel of the Year.
- By carriage from the station Zermatt is car-free, and the hotel's horse-drawn carriage meets guests at the station. In winter the ride can be by sleigh.
- Vita Borni The spa, renovated in 2025, with an indoor pool, saunas, a steam bath, an alpine grotto and private spa suites for one or for two.
- Prato Borni The gourmet restaurant has held a MICHELIN star since 2019, cooking with Valais produce.
