The hotel
A palace above the river.
The palace dates to 1750 and stands at the top of Santa Catarina, next to the Adamastor viewpoint, looking down over Bica to the Tagus. Its present owners bought it in 2003 for its architecture, and the tiles, panelling and coffered ceilings were still there to save. In 2010 its empty rooms hosted Pop Up Lisboa, a festival of urban art before the restoration that made it a hotel.
Kees Eijrond and Naush Kanji, hoteliers for the first time, opened it in December 2017. The architect Teresa Nunes da Ponte kept the wooden ceilings, the panelling and the tiles, and Andrea Previ furnished the rooms in a modern hand. Deluxe rooms look over the red roofs of Bica, and the superior suites face the river. Heritage rules left no room for a spa, so treatments come to your suite.
- The roof A bar on the top floor with a view all round: the old town, the river and, on a clear day, the Atlantic. A small pool sits beside it.
- Winter garden Breakfast is served under glass in the winter garden, or by the pool in warm weather.
- Suba The hotel restaurant, with a modern menu à la carte or as a set menu.
