The hotel
A hotel built round a city wall.
King Fernando had Lisbon walled in 1373. When builders dug out the basement of this eighteenth-century Pombaline house on Largo do Corpo Santo, they found thirty-two metres of that wall, now a national monument, along with objects from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The hotel kept the lot. Because the house was rebuilt in the Pombaline manner after the earthquake, no two rooms have quite the same shape.
It opened in September 2017. The wall stands in the lounge and reading room on level minus one, with the finds on show. Upstairs, each of the five floors takes a region from the Portuguese voyages as its theme, and each has its own scent, coffee on one, cinnamon on another. The restaurant, Porter, is named after the English beer once brewed on the square.
- Sala Muralha Fernandina The lounge and reading room built round the medieval wall, where the hotel's free walking tours begin.
- Sense Spa A water circuit with a Turkish bath, a salt room and a Scottish shower, and a gym alongside.
- Small things The minibar is free, every shower has coloured light you choose, and there is an ice cream machine in the lobby.
