The hotel
The king's architect at home.
Johann Friedrich Ludwig, a German goldsmith, came to Lisbon early in the eighteenth century and, as João Frederico Ludovice, became architect to King João V. For himself he built a five-storey house filling an entire block of Bairro Alto. It came through the earthquake of 1755. Inside are a chapel with Masonic symbols and a Hebrew inscription, and a grand staircase.
From 1946 the Port Wine Institute ran its Solar do Vinho do Porto on the ground floor. Jacques Chahine and Miguel Câncio Martins bought the building, and Câncio Martins, the designer of the Buddha Bar in Paris, turned the old apartments into 61 rooms. Tiles, frescoes and stucco ceilings were restored. The hotel opened in 2022, and the building is listed as a Property of Public Interest.
- Wine at every turn More than 300 Portuguese wines at Federico, tastings led by the sommelier and a wine selection in the room that changes each month.
- Caudalie spa The French vinotherapy house runs a small spa on the ground floor, with two treatment rooms and a shop.
- The viewpoint outside The hotel faces the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint and the Glória funicular, between Chiado, Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real.
