The hotel
A white block behind the palaces.
Príncipe Real takes its name from the prince who became King Pedro V, and its streets are lined with nineteenth-century palaces and town houses. Memmo sits behind them. You reach it down a narrow lane and through a short tunnel off Rua Dom Pedro V, and the hill drops away below the terrace. From the rooms with a city view you look out over the seven hills.
The building is new: four white, geometric storeys with black steelwork, designed by the Portuguese architect Samuel Torres de Carvalho and opened in October 2016. Inside there is limestone, glass and oak, with some blue-and-white tiles in the rooms. It was among the first five-star hotels in the neighbourhood. It belongs to Memmo Hotels, founded by Rodrigo Machaz, and to the Design Hotels group.
- The terrace pool An outdoor pool with the rooftops of the old town and São Jorge Castle in front of it.
