The hotel
Four hundred years of vines.
Quinta da Vacaria first appears in the records in 1616, as a Jesuit property, and counts among the oldest estates in the Douro demarcated region. Its sixty hectares of vines run from the riverbank to the ridge, close to where the Corgo meets the Douro at Peso da Régua. The Marec Group bought it in 2015 and still makes Douro and Port wines here.
The hotel opened in 2024, run by Torel Boutiques, which also has hotels in Porto and Lisbon. The architect Luís Miguel Oliveira restored two of the old farm buildings and set a new wing into the slope, using schist, corten steel, wood and stone from the region. Joana Astolfi's studio did the interiors in greens, blues and earth tones, and João Bicho planted the gardens with lavender, rosemary and other native plants.
- Calla Spa About 1,000 square metres, with a heated indoor pool looking over the Douro, a sauna, a hammam, Vichy showers, four treatment rooms and a wine bath.
- The infinity pool An outdoor pool on the terrace above the vines, served by the Barbus pool bar from late morning.
- The winery Tastings in the cellar and in Casa da Vinha, a glass pavilion at the top of the estate with views up and down the river.
