The hotel

A farmhouse that still makes wine.

The house at Quinta de São Bernardo began as a family farmhouse in 1912. It sits on the riverbank at Mesão Frio, where the Douro wine country starts as you come from Porto. The farm buildings were converted into a small hotel that keeps the old architecture, with modern bathrooms, fittings and furniture inside. Downstairs there is a library, a games room with a pool table and a lounge where the estate's wine is poured.

The estate is still farmed. Its winery makes wine and opens for tastings and tours, and an organic garden supplies the restaurant, which cooks for hotel guests only. Five of the seven rooms look straight down onto the river, as do the infinity pool and the bar terrace. Breakfast comes with organic fruit, and the house rosé often appears at lunch.

  • The winery A working cellar on the estate, with tastings and tours of the vines and the vats.
  • Farm to table The restaurant cooks with produce from the organic garden and pours the house wines, for guests of the hotel only.
  • Over the river An infinity pool and a bar terrace above the Douro, with a library, lounge and games room for the evenings.
