The city

Two thousand years of vines on schist.

Upstream of Porto the river cuts deep into the hills, and every slope is shaped for the vine. The oldest terraces, narrow and uneven, rest on dry walls of schist; the long, regular ones were rebuilt after phylloxera at the end of the nineteenth century. Port has been defined and regulated here since 1756, and UNESCO inscribed the Alto Douro Wine Region in 2001.

Spring brings green shoots and highs of twenty to twenty-four degrees. July and August pass thirty-two in the bottom of the valley, so September, the month of the harvest, is the better time to come back. By October the rain returns, more than 100 mm of it.

  • The terraces Some 24,600 hectares of World Heritage vineyards, from walled socalcos to the broad post-phylloxera rows.
  • The quintas Working wine estates around Régua, Lamego and Armamar that open their cellars for tours and tastings.
  • Lamego A town south of the river, known for the baroque stairway climbing to its hilltop sanctuary.

Arriving

Fly to Porto, then follow the river.

The valley has no airport of its own for jets. Everyone lands at Porto and drives east on the A4 and A24, then down the EN222 along the south bank; Six Senses puts the journey at seventy-five minutes, and Lisbon is about four hours away.
