The hotel
Five centuries at Vale de Abraão.
The estate's records go back to 1464, when a valet to King Afonso V leased a vineyard here to one Abraão Farah, who left his name on the valley. At the end of the nineteenth century Laura Pereira Leitão and Alfredo Passanha settled in for good. They added a tower, moved the chapel inside, laid out lakes and follies, and made this the first house in the Douro with electric light.
The family left in the early 1990s, and after a fire the house stood empty for a decade. Manoel de Oliveira filmed Vale Abraão in 1993. A 57-room hotel opened in 2007, and in 2015 Six Senses took over after a refit by Clodagh Design of New York. Ten more rooms have since been fitted into the old buildings, with bathrooms of Portuguese limestone, and some ground-floor rooms have hot tubs outside.
- The Wine Library Douro wines poured by the resort's sommelier, in an interactive wine library with its own terrace.
- The spa Ten treatment rooms, heated indoor and outdoor pools and treatments made with grapes from the valley, over some 24,000 square feet.
- Harvest work A day as a winemaker, grape stomping in season and cruises on the river, with visits to old wineries nearby.
