The hotel
Built beside the Twin Towers.
Mandarin Oriental opened here in October 1998, the year its neighbours, the Petronas Twin Towers, became the tallest buildings in the world. WAT&G drew the 30-storey building with the Malaysian firm Group Design Partnership, shaping it to sit well beside the towers. The interiors were among the last work of Howard Hirsch, of Hirsch Bedner Associates, and the brief was a residential feel with Malaysian roots.
Inside, Malaysia shows in the detail: copper lanterns, Malay lattice louvres, door handles shaped like the kris and Nyonya screens. The hotel hangs 297 works by local artists. Seven floors are Club floors, served by the MO Club lounge on the 24th, and the Royal Suite sits on level 29. The hotel is joined to the Suria KLCC mall, and the concert hall of the Kuala Lumpur Philharmonic is a few steps away.
