The hotel
From a forty-room motel.
Hotel Africana opened on 16 July 1997, and President Yoweri Museveni came to inaugurate it. It was built by the businessman Hajj Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige, known in Uganda as BMK, at a time when foreign brands ran most of the big hotels in Kampala. It started as a motel of forty rooms on Wampewo Avenue, and he kept putting the profits back into the building.
Phase by phase it grew to more than two hundred rooms and serviced apartments, with fifteen halls and a convention centre for up to three thousand people. Government events, conferences and weddings fill its diary. The hotel sits in Kololo next to Kampala Golf Club, and its success led to further Africana hotels in Moroto, in north-eastern Uganda, and in Lusaka, in Zambia.
