The hotel
Three names on Nakasero Hill.
The hotel opened on 8 October 1967 as the Apolo, named for Prime Minister Milton Obote, who came to the opening. After Idi Amin seized power in 1971 it became the Kampala International Hotel, and it took back its first name when Obote returned in 1980. Fourteen floors high, it stands on the south-western slope of Nakasero Hill above the city centre. In 2015 it was one of three Kampala hotels graded five stars.
In 1987 a group of investors from the Middle East took a lease on the building and refurbished it, and it reopened as a Sheraton. The government sold it outright in 2001. Along the way the fence between the hotel and Jubilee Park came down, and the public garden next door was renamed Sheraton Gardens. In the 2025 grading the tourism board again gave it five stars, one of four hotels in Uganda at that level.
- Sheraton Gardens The former Jubilee Park runs right up to the hotel, with no fence between them. La Terrasse Garden Lounge is the hotel's outdoor lounge.
- Pool and courts An outdoor pool, a tennis court, a gym and a fitness studio, with a sauna and massage rooms.
- Club Lounge The hotel has a Club Lounge to go with its Club rooms and suites.
