The hotel
The grand hotel of 1932, brought back.
The Hotel Majestic opened in 1932 with 51 rooms, built for the estate of Loke Wan Tho to a design by Keyes and Dowdeswell that mixes Beaux-Arts and Art Deco behind a row of Roman columns. It was the place to be seen in colonial Kuala Lumpur. The Japanese used it as a transit camp during the occupation, and on 17 September 1951 the Independence of Malaya Party held its first meeting here.
Newer hotels in Bukit Bintang drew guests away, and it closed in 1983, the year the government protected it under the Antiquities Act. The National Art Gallery used the building until 1998. YTL restored it from 2008, kept the old house as the Majestic Wing of 47 suites and added a fifteen-storey tower in matching Art Deco. It reopened on 8 December 2012 and now belongs to Marriott's Autograph Collection, still managed by YTL Hotels.
- The Orchid Conservatory A glass atrium filled with phalaenopsis orchids, where afternoon tea, lunch or dinner is served for up to twenty.
- The Smoke House A 1930s lounge with a bar, a cigar room, a bespoke tailor and a Truefitt & Hill barber.
