The hotel
A 1959 hotel and its art.
The Hotel Ritz opened in 1959, designed by Porfírio Pardal Monteiro and Leonardo Castro Freire on the hill above Eduardo VII Park. Henri Samuel did the public rooms in Louis XVI and Art Deco, built by Portuguese craftsmen. Four Seasons has run it since 1998, and the rooms were redone in 2021 with the 1950s still in mind. There are ten floors and 282 rooms.
The hotel invited the leading Portuguese artists of the day to decorate it. Almada Negreiros made the Centaur tapestries and a marble sgraffito, Carlos Botelho painted views of Lisbon for the main lounge, and Sarah Afonso designed the Four Seasons, a woven hanging dated 1959. The result is one of the largest private collections of mid-century Portuguese art, and a free app explains it.
