The hotel
Four Pombaline houses on the square.
The hotel fills four joined buildings put up after the earthquake of 1755, framed inside with the gaiola, the timber cage Lisbon used to resist the next one. From the nineteenth century they housed the Grand Hôtel de l'Europe, long since closed. The Bairro Alto Hotel opened on the site in 2005 with fifty-five rooms. The yellow trams of line 28 still run past its door.
In 2017 it closed for two years while Eduardo Souto de Moura, winner of the Pritzker Prize, reworked it. Thirty-two rooms were added, along with a restaurant, a gym and a sixth-floor roof bar. Atelier Bastir came back for the interiors, with rugs and furniture by Portuguese makers and two cast-iron pieces by Rui Chafes in the lobby. The hotel has since joined The Leading Hotels of the World.
- BAHR & Terrace The fifth-floor restaurant and its terrace face the square and the river, with chef Fábio Pereira in the kitchen.
- The roof One floor higher, a bar with a wider view across the Tagus and the city, much sought after at sunset.
- On the doorstep Chiado's shops and the bars of Bairro Alto start at the front door, and the 28 tram stops on the square.
