The hotel

Riding stables turned hotel.

Alphonzo Bell, who developed Bel Air, put up the first buildings here in 1922 as offices and riding stables for his estate. In 1946 the Texan Joseph Drown bought the land, brought in the architect Burton Schutt and opened a hotel. Drown also dug Swan Lake, which guests still cross by a covered stone footbridge on the way in. The gardens around it now hold more than 1,200 kinds of plants, among them tall redwoods.

Dorchester Collection bought the hotel in 2008, closed it for two years of work and reopened it in October 2011. The old riding circle now holds the oval pool, ten feet deep, and the former stable has become rooms. Grace Kelly stayed often enough to have a suite named after her. The MICHELIN Guide gave the hotel three Keys in its first American selection in 2024, and kept them in 2026.

  • The gardens Twelve acres with more than 1,200 kinds of plants, redwoods, hidden courtyards and contemporary sculpture shown through the year.
  • Swan Lake The swans live on the lake below the entrance, and the stone footbridge over it is the way into the hotel.
  • Neighbours at the bar Bel Air residents use the hotel almost as a club, for dinner and a late drink at the Bar & Lounge, with live music most nights.
