The hotel
The first hotel in the Tatras.
Work on a villa resort at Tatranská Lomnica began in 1892, backed by the state and by Budapest nobility. Gedeon Majunke of Spišská Sobota designed the hotel, which took about a year and 85,000 forints to build. It opened in 1894 with twenty-eight rooms, parks laid out by Jan Böllmann and a kitchen supplied from its own gardens. Around 1900 the resort drew guests for bobsleigh, golf and tennis, and for the first climatic spa in the region.
Soldiers were billeted here in the First World War, and looters followed. The cable car to Lomnický štít brought guests back in the 1930s. After privatisation the building declined, and by 1993 it held little more than souvenir stalls. Restoration began in 2015, with a modern wing whose roofline follows the mountains. The hotel received five stars, as a boutique hotel, in December 2022, and it is run independently, outside any chain.
