The hotel
Three buildings, one lake.
Jozef Szentiványi, who founded the resort of Štrbské Pleso, built the first house here in 1893 as his own villa; it is now the Jánošík wing. The Kriváň followed in 1906, a Secession grand hotel by Guido Hoepfner and Géza Györgyi, and the Hviezdoslav, named after the poet, in 1923, with Rondo-Cubist interiors. A dining room and bar were added in 1935 for the ski races.
From 1953 the buildings served as a sanatorium, until their condition forced them to close. The architect Peter Černo drew up a restoration study in 2003, working from archive photographs, and the work took more than four years. The three buildings reopened as one hotel under Kempinski in May 2009, at a cost of about 42 million euros. The hotel belongs to Historic Hotels Worldwide, and the glacial lake lies at its door inside Tatra National Park.
