The hotel

One family, three hundred years of caves.

In the nineteenth century the Psychas family shipped Santorini wine to Odessa. Manos Psychas, a Greek navy captain born there, was posted to the island in the late 1950s. In 1969 he and his wife Nadia bought a stretch of clifftop at Perivolas, on the edge of Oia, with caves about three hundred years old that had sheltered fishermen, farmers and horses.

They restored them with local stone and island craftsmen, and opened a hotel in 1983. The family still owns it. One former stable keeps the round hole in its roof through which feed was once dropped. The rooms are white and vaulted, with no televisions, and the grounds hold old vines and fig trees around a central infinity pool over the sea.

  • The infinity pool A central pool on the cliff edge, unheated, looking straight out over the Aegean.
  • Dinner in a wine cave The restaurant fills a former wine cellar, with candlelit tables outside.
  • A small spa About 60 square metres, with a steam room, sauna, jet showers and an outdoor hot tub.

Rooms & suites

Studios, suites and one with its own pool.

No two rooms are alike. Some are caves, some are old buildings above ground, and every one faces the sea.

  • Studios Lifestyle Studio Built into the cliff, with a terrace over the sea.
  • Suites Deluxe Suites Larger vaulted rooms; one Deluxe Suite has its own pool and a private steam room.
  • Signature Perivolas Suite A private pool and a spa area of its own with steam and hydrotherapy.
