The hotel
A house by the sea, then a cliff.
In the 1970s a Greek woman living in Italy, known as the Italian lady, built a house with stables behind the beach at Perivolos, on the black sand of the south-east coast. The house became a hotel of twelve suites, which opened on 1 June 2021 and is run by Kalia and Antonis Eliopoulos. Istoria is Greek for story, and each suite carries the word for story in another language.
The Athens studio Interior Design Laboratorium dressed it in terracotta, wood and concrete, with earth tones and black next to the island's usual white and blue. Later came a second address, Istoria Cliff: nine cave-house suites at Firostefani facing the caldera. The pool, spa and restaurant are at the beach.

Flying to Santorini.
Santorini International is about 13 kilometres from Perivolos, roughly 20 minutes by car, our estimate. Firostefani, on the caldera just north of Fira, is a shorter drive, also our estimate. Private jets use the same airport, with parking authorised before landing.
