The hotel
A new tower on an old hotel's site.
The name comes from the building it replaced. The Soviet travel agency Intourist opened the Absheron Hotel here in 1985, sixteen floors and 343 rooms on the city's main square. It was pulled down in 2009, and the JW Marriott rose on the same plot, opening in 2012 as Marriott's first hotel in Azerbaijan. Pushkin Park is next door, and the seafront boulevard runs along the water below.
Inside, the colours take their cue from Azerbaijani carpet weaving, and the Badikube library off the lobby stocks books on the country's culture and history. All 237 rooms have large windows onto the Caspian or the skyline, with marble bathrooms and deep tubs for soaking after a long flight. Downstairs, the Sharq Zali ballroom holds up to 1,000 people, part of almost 2,000 square metres of event space.
