The hotel
Three centuries of Douro wine.
Vines grew here in 1551, when the land belonged to the monasteries of Salzedas and São João de Tarouca. A document of April 1738 first calls the estate Pacheca, after Mariana Pacheco Pereira, who ran it herself. In 1758 the Marquis of Pombal marked out the first demarcated wine region in the world, and one of his granite posts still stands at the entrance to the stone tanks.
José Freire de Serpa Pimentel bought the quinta in 1903 and modernised the vineyard and the buildings, among them eight granite tanks still used for red wine. The family began selling wine under the estate's own name in 1977. The manor became a hotel in 2009, and since 2012 the estate has belonged to the Paulo Pereira and Maria do Céu Gonçalves families, with the Serpa Pimentels still involved.
