The hotel

Three generations by the Sunnegga lift.

Theodor Welschen built the house in 1932 with timber and stone of his own. It began as a small family hotel and stayed one, with fourteen rooms, a few steps from where the Sunnegga Express now leaves for the slopes. The Welschen family still runs it, now in the third generation, from a sunny corner of Wiestistrasse with the Matterhorn in view.

In 2025 the family rebuilt it. The hotel reopened on 3 March 2025 with twenty-nine rooms, most of them facing west or south towards the Matterhorn, and a spa of 600 square metres around an indoor pool. Dietmar Sawyere had opened Ad Lib in the house the year before. In 2026 the MICHELIN Guide added the Welschen to its selection with one Key, one of four new Key hotels in Switzerland that year.

  • Next to the lift The Sunnegga Express is about ten metres from the door, and the station a six-minute walk.
  • The spa Six hundred square metres, with an indoor pool at 33°C facing the Matterhorn, a Finnish sauna, a steam room and a gym.
  • Ad Lib Dietmar Sawyere's restaurant, with a menu that changes each week with the market and the mountain season.
