The hotel
From Palazzo d'Afflitto to the Caruso.
The building began in the eleventh century as Palazzo d'Afflitto, home of a noble family. It was rebuilt in the sixteenth century, and local painters covered the rooms with frescoes around 1700, later whitewashed. In 1893 Pantaleone Caruso and his wife Emilia opened five rooms as the Pensione Belvedere. Virginia Woolf, Greta Garbo and Humphrey Bogart came to stay, and Gore Vidal called the view from the terrace the most beautiful in the world.
Orient-Express Hotels, now Belmond, bought the hotel in 2000. The restoration took four years. Antonio Forcellino brought the old frescoes back to light, and Federico Forquet did the interiors. The Caruso reopened in July 2005 with fifty rooms and suites, and a new infinity pool at the edge of the garden. Two medieval stone lions still guard the door, and the hotel supports the music festival held in Ravello each summer.
- The pool A heated infinity pool on the garden's edge, with the coast and the Bay of Salerno straight below.
- The gardens Terraces of olive and lemon trees, herb beds and a rose colonnade that climbs to the highest point of the property.
- Adagio Bar Cocktails built on Amalfi citrus and botanicals, served under restored eighteenth-century frescoes.
