The hotel
A family palazzo on the Grand Canal.
Palazzo Papadopoli stands on the Grand Canal in San Polo, a short walk from the Rialto. The oldest wing dates from 1550 and a second followed in 1864. In the eighteenth century Tiepolo lived here, and his frescoes still cover many of the ceilings. In the nineteenth century the Papadopoli family turned neighbouring plots into two gardens, a rare thing in Venice.
Aman took over the running of the house and opened in June 2013, while the Arrivabene Valenti Gonzaga family kept the top floor for themselves. Jean-Michel Gathy set modern furniture against silk walls, chandeliers and painted ceilings. The restoration won an Italian heritage award, and the MICHELIN Guide now gives the hotel three Keys, its highest level, alongside two other hotels in the city.
- Two gardens A canal garden with a lawn and old trees on the water, and a pergola garden behind. Meals can be taken outside among the trees.
- The altana A wooden roof terrace in the Venetian manner, with views across the city in a half circle.
- The Kitchen Table An Italian take on omakase, for eight to ten people, cooked in front of you.
