The hotel
Eight centuries on one island.
In 1131 a Venetian merchant, Pietro Gattilesso, paid for a church and a hospice here for pilgrims and crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. Camaldolese hermits bought the island in 1645, two years after a chapel modelled on the Holy House of Loreto was built inside the church to give thanks for the end of the plague. Napoleon closed the monastery in 1810.
Soldiers came next, then patients: from 1844 the island held an asylum for women, abandoned in 1992. The buildings became a hotel in 2003, and a company of the Turkish Permak group bought it in 2013. Long run as a Kempinski, it is now independent and joined the Legend Collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts in the summer of 2026.
- The church The Romanesque church of 1131 still stands in the middle of the hotel, with the 17th-century chapel inside it and doors that recall the victory at Lepanto.
- Pool and spa An outdoor heated pool set among Mediterranean gardens, and The Longevity Spa from Milan.
- The hotel boat A traditional wooden boat runs guests to San Marco and back free of charge through the day.
