The hotel
Vivaldi's school on the Riva.
From 1703 until about 1740, Antonio Vivaldi taught music at the Ospedale della Pietà, the orphanage that raised girls left there as infants. The church of the Pietà still stands beside the hotel, along with the bridge that joined the two and the wheel where babies were handed in. The building became a hotel early in the nineteenth century; Freud, Thomas Mann and Proust all stayed. It has been called the Metropole since 1968.
The Beggiato family bought it and still runs it, today with Gloria Beggiato in charge. Since the 1970s they have filled it with more than two thousand objects: over two hundred fans on one floor, corkscrews, Belle Époque cosmetic bags and one of the largest crucifix collections in Italy. Fortuny lamps, Rubelli fabrics and Oriental and Art Deco furniture complete the rooms, no two of them alike.
- Orientalbar & Bistrot The bar fills the old chapel where Vivaldi gave his lessons, with colonial furniture and Eastern objects, and a garden of its own.
- The citrus garden Palms, jasmine and orange trees around an Art Nouveau orangery.
- Metropole Spa A small spa in the style of a hammam, with mosaics, gold leaf and a heated pool.

Getting there
Flying to Venice.
Venice Marco Polo is the airport for scheduled flights and for private jets, and the general aviation terminal has its own water-taxi docks. A water taxi to the Riva degli Schiavoni takes about thirty minutes, our estimate, and stops a few steps from the door. Treviso, about thirty minutes by road from the lagoon, is the alternative for jets.
